The feature character in this work is named Arthur Fulbright, and he has known for some time that the world would end, and knows exactly when that day will be. Despite this limited ability to tell the future (applicable to other things as well) Arthur has not done much with his life, living at home with his mother in a Psycho-type situation, never dating or socializing with other people, just spending quiet evenings contentedly. Until inevitably his mother died.
This pivotal event leaves Arthur alone and with the realization that he has nobody, and nothing to show for his life on this earth. His ambitions to rectify this are small and simple, he needs to be with a woman before the world ends. This simple gesture of humanity via a physical coupling will at least make him feel his life meant something.
