This is a festschrift commemorating one of the 'towering figures' among oceanographers, as Bruce Heezen is described in the opening article. As such, it is, for the most part, a collection of eighteen scientific papers written by Heezen's students and colleagues, that reflects his diverse interests in the fields of marine geology and geomorphology.
The brief descriptions of Heezen's life and work make fascinating reading. He had a great enthusiasm for his subject, he set high standards and, above all, he did innovative work into exciting fields of science. I remember him noisily extracting himself from the centre of a packed lecture hall, presumably as a form of protest because he had found the lecture too prosaic. At that time, in the 196Os, he probably had little time to spare, as he was producing more than 20 publications a year. A list of the complete works of Heezen, amounting to over 300 publications, is included.
