✦ Synopsis
The density of states in the valence band of platinum has been determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of clean ( 100) and ( 111) surfaces and of these surfaces covered with a monolayer of carbon monoxide, ethylene and butadiene. For the (100) surface, the peak in the density of states at 2 eV below the Fermi level is significantly reduced on sorption of n-bonding ligands, whereas little modification is observed following chemisorption on the (111) surface. A rationale for these results is provided and related to changes in surface work function.
