Synopsis
Experiments have been performed using suitably constructed electrochemical cells to determine the reliability of the Henderson equation when used for the purpose of estimating the emf difference between cells with and without liquid junction. It has been found that the Henderson equation is more reliable in estimating the observed emf difference in the case of junctions composed of salt solutions of the same valence type than it is for junctions composed of salt solutions of different valence types. A possible explanation for this observation is discussed.
