โœฆ Synopsis

This paper presents a study into the stress and displacement changes that take place when steel collar edge plating is rigidly connected to the vertical faces of pre-cast concrete raft units used as highway surfacing. The raft units were subjected to a series of single and twin, aircraft-type wheel loads. The major eect of adding a steel collar is to increase the mean raft unit load repetitions, to failure by 48% for the single wheel load, and 106% for the twin wheel load. An increase in the life of the bedding sand and of the sub-base was also found.
