✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A case of senile dementia of Lewy body type (SDLBT) who developed severe and incapacitating extrapyramidal side‐effects (EPSE) following treatment with typical neuroleptics, but responded to and tolerated the new atypical neuroleptic risperidone, is described. The potential benefits of atypical neuroleptics for elderly dementia patients with concurrent psychotic and behavioural symptoms are discussed.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare and sometimes fatal adverse reaction to neuroleptic drugs. Atypical antipsychotic agents, such as risperidone, are thought to be less likely to cause N M S because of their phamacologiical profile. This is a case report of NMS associated with risperidon

Our objective was to determine the value of a modified interphase cytogenetics technique (MICT) by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in the study of atypical cells in body fluids in previously stained slides, allowing a direct morphologic-cytogenetic correlation. Thirty-five cases (29 bladde
