✦ Synopsis

Ferromagnetic spin systems and gauge theories where the gauge group is topologically a sphere, e.g. ~p, U(1) and SU(2) are related to the theory of random walk and random surfaces respectively. I survey some applications of this theme to the @4 field theories.

The random walk theory of crack propagat

Crack propagation is considered as a random walk process of consecutive atomic bond breaking and healing steps. The total number of steps is propo~ion~ to tfre propa~t~n time, and the difference of the number of breaking and healing steps is propo~ional to the location of the crack tip at that time.
