Pulmonary function tests are a quantitative measure of neuromuscular function and are therefore potentially important measurements for clinical trials. Since most patients with progressive neuromuscular disease develop restrictive lung disease, pulmonary function tests have been used in longitudinal studies of natural history and in clinical trials. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have been conducted in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD),' myotonic dystrophy,2 and myasthenia g r a v i ~. ~
