Abstract
A general method is given for finding the complete set of linearly independent crystal field parameters from symmetry arguments. No recourse is made to expansions of the crystal field in terms of spherical harmonics. The core of the method lies in an extension of the known zeroβtrace property of tensor operators, to the case of irreducible operators.
