โฆ Synopsis
THE carrying out of ultrasonic experiments in the helium temperature range is made difficult because of insufficient information about materials suitable for achieving good acoustic contact in this temperature region. The silicon vacuum grease I used for this purpose by other authors is not manufactured by Soviet industry, and an epoxy resin with hardener 2 is not always convenient because it is not possible to use the same specimen many times over. We tested a number of greases and oils to find a substance which could act as a bond down to helium temperatures. The following were tested: Apiezon L and N, 'Ramsay' vacuum greases, salicylate grease, picein, glycerine, silicon vacuum oil, No. I, II, and VI silicon liquids for filling oscillographs, GkZh-94 oil and butyl alcohol.
The method of testing was to press a polished X-cut quartz plate at frequency 8 Mc/s with bronze springs to one of the plane parallel polished surfaces of a metal specimen on which a drop of the material under investiga-
