The paper describes the corrosion mechanism occurring when reinforcing steel corrodes in concrete structures, followed by a brief survey of alternative methods of preventing reinforcement corrosion. Details on the performance of 3CR12 as an alternative to mild steel reinforcing are provided after 4½ years of exposure to a severe simulated marine climate. Experimental details of the research project are provided. 3CR12 emerges as a viable reinforcing material for concrete structures exposed to severely corrosive conditions.
