In the course of an investigation of the properties of 2,2'-dithiodipyri-dine2 and its effects on animal cells, we found that this compound oxidizes thiols rapidly to the corresponding disulfide (1)) and that this reaction can be coupled to metabolic reactions, such as the reduction of GSSG by TPNH (2).
