โœฆ Synopsis

This paper describes statistical issues that arose in a case concerning the violation of environmental regulations. In the proceedings the concept of the power of a test was used to demonstrate that the sample sizes of the studies submitted by the defense were too small to provide adequate evidence that the product in question was safe. We present an alternative examination of the issue from a Bayesian perspective and reach a similar conclusion. The role and limitations of composite sampling in environmental cases is discussed.
