✦ Synopsis

The literature concerning the anatomy of the urachus impresses one with the differences of opinion of various investigators. Luschka (1862), Wutz (1883) and more recently Begg ('30) have done careful anatoniical dissections of many specimens and their findings are by no means in complete agreement. This situation is readily understandable in the light of the complex changes occurring in this region after birth and the resultant variability of adult specimens. This work was undertaken in an effort to increase the number of cases carefully studied and to survey the variations which might be expected to occur in this region.

The paper is based on anatomical observations upon thirtpfive autopsy specimens from premature and term fetuses, one 3 year old infant, and over 100 adult cadavers.

## Abstract Previous descriptions of human gubernacular embryology failed to follow some basic developmental processes, and surgically relevant structures, such as the iliopubic tract, had not been discussed relative to gubernacular development. We addressed these shortcomings in this study that ex
