✦ Synopsis

The upper critical field of untwinned YBa,Cu,O,_, crystals is determined from the onset of diamagnetism in dc-magnetization measurements.

There is no evidence of anisotropy in the upper critical field in the basal plane indicating that the ordering of oxygen into chains plays only a minor role in the mechanism leading to superconductivity. The slopes of the upper critical field are -l.ST/K for the c-direction and -1OTIK for the a, b-direction.
