The Four Stages of Awakening:

Stage One is known as the average human consciousness that is oblivious to its true essence. This is the belief in being a separate person–the cause of all human suffering.

Stage Two is the seeking stage where one asks consciously or unconsciously, “There has to be a better way to live!” One still believes in being a separate person, but questions beliefs.

Stage Three is the time of confusion, yet the bridge has been crossed and there is no way back. Either one gives up from lack of answers, surrendering to Grace or stays stuck for the rest of his or her life.

Stage Four is the actual awakening. Everything you believed takes a headlong leap into oblivion. You see a whole new perspective where nothing you thought about life had any validity.
