✦ Synopsis

The triaxial stress field along the centre line of two compact tension specimens has been measured using neutron diffraction.

Each specimen had been subjected to -20 000 cycles at AK -31 and Km,, -34 MPa mm"', to induce a 3 mm crack and then bolted open at maximum stress in different ways so that the amount of plastic strain differed. The stress field was remeasured in each specimen after the bolt had been removed. The results are discussed in terms of expectations from fracture mechanics calculations.

In vivo fatigue failure of hip prosthesis stems has been extensively reported in literature. The ISO 7206 international standard has been developed to assess the fatigue reliability of hip prostheses. It describes the fatigue testing apparatus and procedure and it is currently adopted by several tes
