The present paper is one of a series on the coiiiparative physiology of placental transfer. The results of studies with radioactive sodium 011 the hemochorial placenta of the guinea pig (Flexner and Pohl, '41) and the endotheliochorial placenta of the cat (Pohl and Flexner, '41) have previously been presented. Since the rat's placenta is of the hemochorial type (Grosser, '27 ; Mossman, '37), results obtained from 'Aided by a grant from tlic Rockefeller Foundnt,ion Fluid Research Fund of the School of Medicine, tlie Johns Hopkins University.
