The Thermoelectric Powers of the Actinide Metals at Low Temperatures

CONTINUING our study of the low temperature properties of the actinide elements, 1.2 the thermoelectric powers of thorium, uranium, neptunium, and plutonium have been measured between room temperature and about 20 ยฐ K. It is hoped to publish a full account of this work and that on the electrical resistivity in the near future but, meanwhile, the main results on thermoelectric power are reported briefly below)

The experimental method adopted was a differential one employing copper--constantan thermocouples. The thermoelectric power of the specimens was thus obtained relative to that of copper which was calibrated against a specimen of spectroscopically pure lead, the power of which could be accepted as a standard. 4 The results given in Figures and are thus absolute values for the metals under investigation. In all cases good agreement was obtained between measurements made under conditions of thermal equilibrium and others made while the specimens were warming or cooling. The cryostat used in this investigation has been described elsewhere. 5
