โฆ Synopsis
The thermal expansion behaviour of pyrolytic graphite-bromine residue compounds, under different applied loads, has been examined. The observed behaviour is qualitatively explained, using a model which considers the bromine to exist as gaseous bubbles within the lamellar structure of the graphite crystal, and treats these bubbles as Griffith's cracks. The quantitative treatment is not exact and the discrepancies are discussed. A comparison is drawn with the known thermal expansion behaviour of some forms of mica. Mica also has a lamellar structure and is known to contain bubbles of the type postulated.
