The fractionated volatile products arising from the stepwise thermal degradation of cellulose triacetate in vaeuo are analysed by gas-solid chromatography, mass spectrometry, i.r. and NMR spectroscopy, and chemical tests. Gas evolution data resemble those reported for the thermal degradation of cell

✦ Synopsis
A mechanism for the thermal degradation of cellulose triacetate in vacuo is proposed, having as its principal features deacetylation in the polymer chain and chain-scission at the 1,4glycosidic linkages between pyranose rings. The former process results in formation of acetic acid, the latter in the formation of the tarry material. A model structure for the tarry material is proposed to satisfy the analytical data and chemical properties of the tar. The proposed chain-scission process enables a detailed picture of the process of residue formation to be assembled, and the overall mechanism accounts satisfactorily for the quantities of the various degradation products.
