✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The thermal decomposition at 300 C of five dicarbanilates derived from 4,4 'β€” diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) was studied in an attempt to elucidate the low‐temperature decomposition mechanism of rigid MDI‐based polyurethane foams. The dicarbanilates of primary and secondary alcohols decomposed via normal fission of the urethane linkages, whereas those of tertiary alcohols yielded 4,4β€²β€”diphenylmethane diamine (MDA), carbon dioxide and the appropriate olefin via abnormal fission of the carbanilates.
