The following equation is used to determine the number of theoretical plates, N, from the peak width, w, , at any height ratio, r, and the retention volume, 7, in the case of an initially thin zone occupying only one plate at the start [l] It can still be used with little error for a zone of finite width provided that where No is the number of plates occupied by thezone at column inlet and N is total number of plates in column.
