On the Kamerlingh Onnes conference on low temperature physics at Leiden in June, 1958, a new temperature scale for the liquid 4He region was presented jointly by J. I~. Clement and J. K. Logan and the authors. It was recommended for use instead of the two scales, T55~. and TL55, which have been used

✦ Synopsis
The "1948 Helium Vapor-Pressure Scale" 1) was one of the first projects of the Commission on very low temperatures (I.U.P.A.P.) organized in Amsterdam in 1948

Two independent low temperature scales, based on noise thermometry below 0.6 K and on extrapolation from 1.5 K using magnetic thermometry, have been realized and compared. Both scales coincide at the pressure minimum of the He-3 melting curve within +0.3 mK and determine its temperature as 315.1 mK.
The basis of the International Temperature Scale of 1990, ITS-90, at low temperatures is outlined. The vapour pressure equations specified for 3He and 'He are given and the prospects for a future extension of the scale to millikelvin temperatures are reviewed.
