The stress distribution is obtained around the tip of a crack runmng in a brittle material. The stresses are written as the sum of the associated static solution and the wave-effect terms which depend upon the crack speed. The results obtained clearly reduce to the associated static solutions if the
hvo dimensional distribution of dislocations compatible with slip line theory is used to simulate the plastic flow near the mode II crack tip. On the basis of this model, the critical shear stress 7c is derived from the variational form of the energy principle. In comparison with the critical tensil
