✦ Synopsis
Values for the partial molal volumes (~v) of a series of poly(vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) copolymers, obtained from the same parent poly(vinyl acetate) but of differing degrees of hydrolysis and block size distribution, were obtained from high precision density measurements. An analysis of the data is presented in which the contributions of (vinyl acetate/vinyl acetate), (vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol) and (vinyl alcohol/vinyl alcohol) dyads to the value of ~bv are determined. The results appear to show that temperature dependent hydrophobic effects upon ~bv are initiated by the (vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol) dyads, not by the (vinyl acetate/vinyl acetate) dyads, as might be expected.
