Abstract
Di‐(1,3‐dimethylbut‐2‐enyl‐[4‐^3^H~1~]mono‐, di‐and trisulphides have been synthesised via the common intermediate S‐(1,3‐dimethylbut‐2‐enyl‐[4‐^3^H~1~] thiouronium bromide (I). Protonation of a mixture of 2‐methylpenta‐1,3‐and ‐2,4‐dienes during formation of (I) was shown to be accompanied by a large kinetic isotope effect such that protonation was 8–10 times more probable than tritonation.
