β¦ Synopsis
The title compound is obtained from reactions of (\mathrm{CsI}, \mathrm{ZrI}{4}, \mathrm{Zr}), and (\mathrm{C}) in sealed (\mathrm{Ta}) at (800^{\circ} \mathrm{C}) (but not at (850^{\circ} \mathrm{C}) ). Both (\mathrm{Zr}{6} \mathrm{I}{12} \mathrm{C}) and (\mathrm{Zr}{6} \mathrm{I}{14} \mathrm{C}) are unstable in the presence of (\mathrm{CsI}). The (\mathrm{Cs}{2} \mathrm{Zr}{7} \mathrm{I}{18} \mathrm{C}) is shown by (\mathrm{X})-ray crystallography to be isostructural with (\mathrm{K}{2} \mathrm{Zr}{7} \mathrm{Cl}{18} \mathrm{H}) and is better described as (\mathrm{Cs}{2} \mathrm{ZrI}{6} \cdot \mathrm{Zr}{6} \mathrm{I}{12} \mathrm{C}), the iodine in the (\mathrm{ZrI}{6}^{2-}) groups bonding to metal vertices in six separate carbon-centered clusters ( (\mathrm{R} \overline{3}), (Z=3) for (\left.a=10.744(1) \AA, c=29.409(5) \AA, R(F) / R_{\mathrm{w}}=3.5 / 4.4 %\right)).
