โœฆ Synopsis

The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in complexes of tile rare earths containing heterocyclic ligands with nitrogen donor atoms. Many solid complexes containing 2,2'-dipyridyl, x,Io-phenanthroline and 2,2',2"-terpyridyl and various anions have been isolated and their spectroscopic properties investigatedt-o.

In tile work described here, a report by KONONENKO AND POLUEKTOV 7 that a neodymium(III)-bis-phenanthroline-tris-salicylate complex can be extracted by either chlorofoent or benzene from an aqueous solution containing the components, has been confirmed and it has proved possible to prepare and characterize a whole series of such compounds (Table ). Their empirical composition, M(phen)2(FISal)s, raises problems as to the coordination number of the central metal ion which could range from 7 to I0 depending on the way in which the salicylic acid moiety is coordinated. That the o-hydroxy group must be involved in the reaction appears to follow from studies with the para-isomer and with unsubstituted benzoic acid; for
