Abstract
With the large number of insulin preparations available, there is potential for confusion not only for patients but for health care professionals. The aim of this study was to identify any problems relating to the supply of insulin from community pharmacles to diabetic patients. Sixtyβfive patients and 30 pharmacists were interviewed. Twentyβfour pharmacists reported a total of 34 problems relating to prescriptions for insulin, the most common being ambiguity over the species of the insulin. Six patients were aware that they had received prescriptions for the wrong insulin (five dispensed) and two had been given a prescription for viais when cartridges were required (two dispensed).
This study reinforces the importance of educating patients about their insulin therapy and the need for health care professionals to keep upβtoβdate with developments in insulin therapy.
