✦ Synopsis

Single-phase, simple BCC structure, solid solution U-Zr alloys were obtained by a rapid-quench-from-melt technique. Compositions range from 25 to 80 atomic percent Zr. Lattice parameters, atomic volumes and superconducting transition temperatures (between 0.6 K and 1.3 K) are reported. The interatomic spacing is less in the simple BCC structure than it would be in a close-packed structure. A criterion is suggested for U to be completely nonmagnetic with superconductivity possible, undepressed by localized state effects, in solid solution alloys.
