โœฆ Synopsis


The composition of the suberins of six closely related Ribes species has been examined using thin-layer chromatography, preparative thin-layer chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The suberins have a similar qualitative composition and contain alkan-l-ols, c~,og-diols, monobasic acids, or, m-dibasic acids, to-hydroxymonobasic acids, dihydroxyhexadecanoic acids and 9,10,18trihydroxyoctadecanoic acid. The neutral constituents comprise up to 16 % of the total suberins with Cls and C~o diols being the most abundant compounds, m-Hydroxymonobasic acids ranging from C16 to Ca4 account for at least 50~o of the total suberin of each species and ~,og-dibasic acids of similar chain lengths for a further 25-30 %. The predominant homologues of the two major acid classes are C16 and monoenoic Cts. The main difference between the species occurs in the relative amounts of the various constituents.
