Abatrac-Fracture properties in birefringent materials are studied by the improved method of caustics. A new method for determining stress intensity factors in birefringent materials is found. As examples, the stress intensity factors of epoxy and polycarbonate of plates with different cracks and loadings are determined. By comparison, the results of the paper are more precise than those of Zhang [Master's degree thesis, Northwestern Polytechnical University (1!990)].
