✦ Synopsis

Recently, experimental evidence has been obtained for the existence of dianionic carbon clusters as small as C:-. So far, no theoretical evidence has been achieved for the electronic stability of C+-, which is attributed to the underlying assumption of C:-having a linear structure. Linear, quasi-linear and trigonal planar atomic arrangements for C:-are discussed At the latter structure C:-is predicted to be both stable with respect to vertical and adiabatic electron autodetachment and stable with respect to all fragmentation pathways. The reasons leading to the electronic stability of the trigonal C:-dianion are discussed and illuminated by drawing a connection with the structurally related MX$-alkali halides. Some remarks are made on larger dianionic carbon clusters.

Small doubly charged niobium clusters are observed in a molecular beam emerging from a laser vaporization/supersonic expansion source if electron impact ionization is utilized in the expansion region. Doubly charged clusters from n=2 to n= I5 are readily detected. The doubly charged dimer cation has
