✦ Synopsis

In aqueous alkaline suspension at temperatures between 20-30 OC, the benzofuroxanes ( I ) undergo a coupling reaction with hydroquinones, naphthohydroquinones, P-naphthols, and with a-naphthols (or phenols, 60 "C) with simultaneous cyclization to give good, in some cases quantitative, yields of phenazine ( 6) or benzophenazine di-N-oxides c6-91.
