✦ Synopsis

In the examination of alite in Portland cement clinker by transmission electron microscopy, the dominant structure found was that described by Jeffery (I). Twinning on the pseudomirror plane of the monoclinic structure has been found. This provides an explanation for some weak extra X-ray reflections reported by Jeffery (1). A transformation to a new lattice occured when alite was heated in the electron microscope. Microstructural defects and diffraction effects not accounted for by the Jeffery lattice are discussed.
