✦ Synopsis

The stresses on planes within a sphere in simple flow fields are examined with a view to predicting the manner of break-up under fluid forces. The principles of powder technology are invoked in order to find likely surfaces of particle failure. A discussion is then presented of the relationship between the stresses in an ideal sphere and the reported behaviour of real particle aggregates. It is concluded that the strength of coaaula and flocculated material is highly dependent on the size to which the aggregate has&own.
