โฆ Synopsis
Expressions for the stress intensity factors for centre and edge cracked sheets subject to an arbii mode 1 loading are given. For edge cracks the expression gave results in excellent agreement with known solutions. For centre cracks excellent agreement with a known solution was obtained when the applied stress was symmetric about the centre of the sheet but only fair agreement was obtainable for large cracks when the stress was skew symmetric. The compliance functions for finite and infinite width sheets subject to uniform, linear, quad&c, cubic and quartic stress variations are given and their application to practical probkms indicated.
