✦ Synopsis

In this paper, we report on some recent upgrades to SMCAMS (the Shanghai Mini-Cyclotron based Accelerator Mass Spectrometer): mainly a new multi-cathode Cs sputter negative ion source and a new control system. An emergent fundamental problem of instability of the magnetic field with mini-cyclotron AMS will be discussed along with our solution. Given the recent successes of the smaller tandembased AMS systems, at present it is unlikely that this instrument will find widespread use in the AMS community.
