✦ Synopsis

We propose a reaction-diffusion model of the mechanisms involved in the healing of cornea1 surface wounds. The model focuses on the stimulus for increased mitotic and migratory activity, specifically the role of epidermal growth factor. We determine an analytic approximation for the speed of travelling wave solutions of the model and verify the result numerically. The predicted speed compares very well with experimentally measured healing rates.

This paper considers the comparison of experimental spatial and temporal data of mitotic rates measured during corneal epithelial wound healing (CEWH) of a rat model with the predictions of a computer modelling framework. Heme oxygenase (HO) represents an intrinsic cytoprotective system based on its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties mediated via its products biliverdin/bilirubin and carbon monoxide (CO). We showed that deletion of HO-2 results in impaired corneal wound healing with associated chronic in

Though it has been claimed that mitotic activity is stimulated after injury (Jus6lius, '10; Arey, '36; Arey and Covode, '43) it is now generally assumed that the covering of small epithelial defects takes place by "migration" of the neighbouring cells into the defect, and not by mitosis. Much of the
