โฆ Synopsis
Absorption, heterogeneous reaction, surface mass transport, and interfacial mass transfer occur at moving, deforming interfaces in many processes of interest to chemical engineers. A precise description of those processes requires the general form of the species jump condition. In this paper we present a simple derivation of the species mass jump condition at a nonmaterial surface using only 3-space vector analysis. This involves the derivation of the integral jump condition, the point jump condition, and the form of the jump condition applicable to the Monge representation of a surface. Application of the jump condition is illustrated in terms of the process of adsorption and reaction at a catalytic surface, and in terms of the mass transfer process that takes place in a Stefan diffusion tube.
