โฆ Synopsis
A study of lightning arrester performance under t?Le effect of conductive surface contaminants has revealed some aspects of the mechanism of the deterioration of the sparking threshold. It has shown that under certain conditions partial sparking may occur with an intermittent but rather persistent nature and may lead to failure of the arrester due to insulation breakdown. This phenomenon was analyzed using the nonlinear characteristics of the various types of gas discharges both within the arrester and within the contaminant.
It was possible to represent the arrester by four diflerent modela depending on the particular mode of operation. Finally, quantitive data were obtained on the percentage threshold drop of a particular arrester due to a severe contaminant.
