RECENTLY2 it was discovered that in the trsns-5-methyl-2-cyclohexenyl Rnitrobensoate system internal return results in equilibration of the carbovl oxygen atoms at a rate greater than that of allylic rearrangement (racemization). This suggested that equilibration of carboul omgen atoms might be a useful method for detecting ion pair return in systems which do not rearrange.
