β¦ Synopsis
Wind, H., 1979. The soil-freezing method for large tunnel constructions. Eng. Geol., 13: 417--423.
Examples of the use of the soil-freezing method applied in large tunnelling projects show that this construction method can well compete with traditional methods in both technical and economic aspects. This has been made possible by the efforts of participant engineers of various disciplines of the executing firms, by scientists and by understanding clients. It is a motivation for all concerned to continue their cooperation in order to find solutions for the many problems still unsolved in this field.

1979 contract No.4 of the Stadtbahnbau (Metroconstruction) in Duisburg was executed, making successful use of gap freezing. The gap freezing was necessary because the Metro-tunnel is crossed by a groundwater stream (flow velocity up to 15 m/d) and it had to be assured that open cut construction of
Tunnel excavation is a coupled three-dimensional problem dealing with two different structures: lining and rockmass. For a simple application it is useful to develop simplified methods by treating the problem as plane strain. If the problem of tunnel face advance presents an axisymmetric geometry,
In almost every work on fuzzy sets, the existence of membership functions taking part in the considered model is assumed and it is not studied in depth whether or not such functions exist. On the other hand, generally the relationship between a certain studied characteristic and its referential set
