โฆ Synopsis
he 1960s witnessed the academic birth of the field of neurodevelopmental disabilities with the formal training of T pediatricians in the diagnosis and multidisciplinary team evaluation of children with handicaps. The initial emphasis was on a pediatric population having mental retardation. The concept of establishing University Affiliated Programs (UAPs) to utilize the resources and activities of the university teaching centers originated with President John F. Kennedy's Committee on Mental Retardation. It was felt that research and service problems of children with mental retardation and associated neurodevelopmental disorders would receive better attention with the establishment of such centers. The primary focus was upon diagnosis, niultidisciplinary evaluation, therapy, and postdoctoral training. These programs were f h d e d by Maternal and Child Health Services.
With sustained academic and societal attention paid to the wide spectrum of neurodevelopniental disabilities, and in order to identify pediatricians in this field, the Society for Developmental Pediatrics was founded in 1978 in Baltimore, Maryland as an association of board certified pediatricians with formal training in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their Families.
