✦ Synopsis

Over the next two decades, Asia-Pacific is poised to become the largest economic bloc in the world. The potential for the wind energy sector to do the same also holds. Policy mechanisms have begun to emerge, prompted by global initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol as well as growing national level awareness to environmental concerns. This has created a significant market, enough to prompt numerous firms, literally hun-dreds in India for example, to enter the power production business and for global wind turbine suppliers to establish key positions throughout the region. However, much work remains to be done, particularly in markets such as China, where no policy mechanisms are in place to support wind, and in India, where policies have long been in place but require further modification to maximize growth. Ultimately, however, Asia-Pacific as a region will play a strategic role in the growth and market share positions of the global wind turbine manufacturers, provide a launching pad for a number of developers, and serve as a critical foundation for the overall well being of the industry.
