## Abstract On theoretical grounds, abnormalities of the motor cortex in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) could lead to anterograde (βdyingβforwardβ) transneuronal degeneration of the anterior horn cells as suggested by Charcot. Conversely, retrograde (βdyingβbackβ) degeneration of
