1PAT 77, tile first conference oil Ion Plating and Allied Techniques to take place in Europe, was a great success, attracting 200 scientists and engineers from 12 countries.

The conference presented the latest developments in vacuum deposition techniques for metals and compounds in 29 papers from many of the world's foremost authorities.

The techniques of ion plating, ionized cluster beam technology, rf sputtering, sputter ion plating, ion implantation, and the activated reactive evaporation process were extensively reviewed. Contributed papers presented reflected the wide range of applications for these techniques for functional and decorative coatings. The applications include corrosion protection, tribology, tool and turbine coatings, batteries, solar energy, nuclear power, electronic components, displays and optical coatings.
