The singular locus of a Schubert variety X ยต in the flag variety for GL n (C) is the union of Schubert varieties X ฮฝ , where ฮฝ runs over a set Sg(ยต) of permutations in S n . We describe completely the maximal elements of Sg(ยต) under the Bruhat order, thus determining the irreducible components of the singular locus of X ยต .
