✦ Synopsis

An approach to the sequential ostimation of the location and scale-parameters of a logistic response curve using small sample &ea is discussed. The experimental design employed is a variation of Dixon's Up-Down method with variable step size. Modified maximum likelihood estimates for the location and scale parameters are used in conjunction with this design. The effective new of the new estimation procedure and a comparison of this experimental design with some standard alternative designs are examined using Monte Carlo simulation.

Sample size requirements for epidemiologic studies are usually determined on the basis of the desired level of statistical power. Suppose, however, that one is planning a study in which the participants' true exposure levels are unobservable. Instead, the analysis will be based on an imprecise surro
